The monsters are too tall to fit through the 1-block-high empty space, but the water flows right through it and the pressure pushes them against the glass until they drown! Once they have drowned, any items they drop will float right along with the water and be deposited underneath your house, ripe for the picking. The force of water will hold them down, and they'll suffocate! If you've done this correctly, any mobs who attempt to attack your house will step in the water and instantly be pulled forward and down into the depths.
